Finding it a hassle to come all the way down just to fix a minor problem? Here is what you can do. Below is a list of maintenance tips where you can better maintain your scooter and also do a little bit of hands on and try fixing the scooter yourself.
Knowing your scooter well
Firstly, to be able to maintain your e-scooter, you need to first know your scooter well. As its owner, you should know it better than anyone else. When you start to feel that something is wrong while riding, take the necessary steps to investigate further and resolve the issue. Just like any other vehicle, your e-scooters need to be regularly maintained in order for it to function properly.
Pavement rides
As you know, e-scooters are allowed on footpaths and cycling paths. Depending on the footpath, cycling on uneven or rocky footpaths might strain your e-scooter, causing its key component to become loose; this is where maintenance comes in.
Furthermore, you should also refrain from using your scooters on rainy days and wet pavements, even if the scooter is splash proof, as wet surface can be slippery for a two-wheel vehicle. For example, while riding on rainy days/wet surfaces, your e-scooter might be prone to skid, which could endanger the safety of you and pedestrian alike. When buying an electric scooter, give priority to those with shock absorbers, which will extend the life of the product and enhance the sense of use. Ranger Serise with patent shock absorption, can reduce component damage caused by road vibration.
Tires
A common problem with e-scooters is its tires. Most electric scooter tires need to be changed after roughly one year. It is recommended that you change the tires, if they are worn out, as it would not be able to go through wet roads and has a higher risk of punctures. To extend the lifespan of your tire, try to always pump the tire to its specific/ recommended pressure (NOT the Maximum tire pressure). If tire pressure is too high, then less of the tire touches the ground. If tire pressure is too low, then too much of the tire’s surface area touches the ground, which increases friction between the road and the tire. As a result, not only will your tires wear off prematurely, but they also could overheat. Hence, keeping your tire at the recommended pressure. For Ranger Serise, the large-size 10-inch non-pneumatic run-flat tires with inner honeycomb shock absorption technology make your ride much smoother and more stable, even in rough terrain.
Battery
The charger of an e-scooter usually has a light indicator. For most `chargers, the red light indicates that the scooter is charging while the green light indicates that it is fully charged. Hence, if there are no light or different colors, it is most likely that the charger is spoiled. Before panicking, it would be wise to give the supplier a call to find out more.
As for batteries, you are recommended to charge it frequently. Even when you are not using the scooter daily, make it a habit to charge it every 3 months to prevent it from degenerating. However, you are not to charge the battery for too long as it may cause damage to it. Lastly, you will know that the battery is getting old when it is not capable of holding a full charge for longer hours. This is when you would need to consider replacing it.
Brakes
There is a need for regular tuning of your scooter brakes and replacement of the brake pads to ensure your safety while riding the scooter. This is because, the brake pads would wear out after a period of time and will require adjustments for it to function effectively.
For instances when your scooter brake is not functioning properly, you can take a look at the brake pads/brake shoes, and also check the brake cable tension too. The brake pads will wear out after a period of use and will require adjustments or replacements to ensure that they always work effectively. If there is no problem with the brake pads/ brake shoes, try tightening the brake cables. Furthermore, you can also do some daily checks to unsure that the rims and discs of your brakes are clean and lubricate the brake pivot point when necessary. Bearings
For e-scooter, there is a need for you to service and clean the bearings after using it for a period of time as there may be dirt and dust accumulated while you were riding. You are advised to use a cleaning solvent to remove the dirt and grease on the bearings and let it dry before spraying new grease into the bearing.
Cleaning of scooter
When you are wiping your scooter, please refrain from “showering” your e-scooter, especially when cleaning areas near the motor, engine and battery. These parts usually don´t go well with water.
To clean your scooter, you can first dust off all exposed parts using a soft and smooth dry cloth before cleaning it with a detergent dampened cloth – regular detergent used for washing your cloth will do. You can also wipe the seat with disinfection wipes and subsequently, wipe it dry. After cleaning your scooter, we recommend you to cover your scooter to prevent dust build up.
The seat
If your scooter comes with a seat, always make sure that they are attached securely before riding. You wouldn’t want the seat to come loose while you are riding, would you? For safety purposes, it is recommended that you give your scooter seat a firm wiggle before using it to ensure that it is properly attached.
Park in shade
You are recommended to park your e-scooter in the shade so as to avoid exposure to extreme temperature (hot/ cold) and rain. This protects your scooter from dust, moisture and sunlight which minimizes the damage of your scooter. Also, most electric scooter uses Li-ion battery, which does not function well under high temperature environment. When exposed to extreme temperature, the lifespan of your Li-ion battery might be shortened. If you got no choice, you can try covering it with reflective cover.
